The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is coming to Anaheim, CA in May 2020.
This is a great opportunity for corporate social responsibility, for individuals to give back to young scientists and engineers, and to showcase the Orange County community.
We need your help as a volunteer, in particular to judge the competition and to interpret for international students.
Since 1950, Society for Science & the Public has provided an international stage for the world’s best and brightest young people. The Regeneron ISEF, a program of the Society, is the world’s largest pre-college science and engineering competition. Over 1,800 high school students from around the U.S. and around the world compete for nearly $5 million in awards. Alumni have gone on to win many honors, found companies, create solutions and contribute to a more scientifically literate society around the world.
Our volunteer judges typically have a Ph.D. or six years of expert experience. Disciplines needed cover the gamut of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Judging is a minimum one-day commitment on May 13th (an additional half day on the 12th is preferred). A background check at no cost to the volunteer is required. More information and detailed instructions about volunteering can be found here.
In addition to judging, volunteer interpreters in several languages are also in great need. Information about all volunteer opportunities can be found at the Society’s website.
For a quick feel of the energetic atmosphere at the Fair, please enjoy this video from 2019.
Judging will take place at the Anaheim Convention Center starting on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 12 through the evening of Wednesday, May 14, 2020.
Due to the large number of Grand Award Judges that are anticipated, the Society is not able to support travel expenses or visa invitations.
A Grand Award Judge must have one of the following qualifications:
- Have a minimum of six years related professional experience beyond receiving their B.A., B.S., or Master's degree, OR
- Have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent (D.O., Ed.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., etc.), OR
- Is a current graduate student with more than four years of doctoral-level research experience or who is within one year of doctoral dissertation defense.
Judges may include university faculty and scientists, industrial engineers and scientists, representatives of private and federal research centers and agencies, medical researchers, post-doctoral fellows, and senior graduate students. Affiliated science fair directors and elementary or secondary school teachers are generally NOT eligible to serve as ISEF judges.
We would appreciate your help recruiting other judges or volunteers to ISEF by contacting your colleagues and friends.
You may direct individuals interested in judging and to review the 21 scientific disciplines in which finalists will compete. Please direct those interested in general volunteering to our Volunteers page for more information.
Please note that as part of the application process, all volunteers and judges will have a background screening completed through Sterling Volunteers, a third-party vendor. More information is available on our Background Check page.
